About Maddie
Maddie Yule is a Master’s student in Women and Gender Studies at the University of Toronto, with a collaborative specialization in Development Policy and Power. Maddie explores the intersections of gender, labour, capitalism, and technology — amplifying the overlooked contributions that keep our digital world functioning.
Alongside their academic work, Maddie has built professional expertise in digital publishing, community management, and B2B marketing, with years of experience developing creative strategies to foster community, build brand awareness, and tell stories across digital platforms.
Beyond research and professional work, Maddie is a writer and visual artist, committed to using narrative and art as tools to amplify underrepresented voices.

Who’s Allowed to Girlboss? A Gen Z Call for Zooming Out Amidst the Rise of Artificial Intelligence
Â
Maddie’s chapter is a provocative exploration of Gen Z’s complicated relationship with ambition, labour, and the future of work in an AI-driven world. They dismantle stereotypes of Gen Z as “lazy” or “entitled,” reframing the generation as one deeply ambitious — just not in the same ways previous generations defined ambition.
Through stories of the pandemic, early-career disillusionment, and the accelerating impact of AI on entry-level jobs, Maddie illustrates how Gen Z is questioning not just what work means, but what kind of life is worth building. They examine how automation erodes proving grounds for young professionals and how opting out of AI adoption can feel like career sabotage.
At its heart, the chapter is a call to zoom out — to examine the ethical, environmental, and labour costs of AI adoption, and to ask: who gets to belong in this new version of tech, and who is being left behind? Maddie challenges readers to recognize that an equitable future will not be handed to us by technology — it must be built by people willing to resist inequitable systems and amplify voices often silenced.
Together with Marie Wiese, Maddie co-authored the Conclusion of You’re On Mute. It is a collective call to action — a reminder that progress in tech has never come from technology alone, but from women fighting for space, connection, and equity. Their words insist that AI will not save us, but care, community, and collective action might
“Your advocacy for women in tech cannot and should not begin and end when you find yourself with the tools, status, and privilege to not drown. If you want to build an equitable future, you cannot look away from the systems, the labor, and the people made invisible by your progress.”
